Rapids Lake Education and Visitor Center is Open to the Public!
The Minnesota Valley Trust completed construction in the Fall of 2007 of a new 12,000 square foot education and visitor center on the Rapids Lake Unit of the Minnesota Valley Refuge. The center has been donated by the Trust to the US Fish and Wildlife Services and is now open to visitors. Click here for information on hours and programs.
The Minnesota Valley Refuge park rangers at Rapids Lake invite schools to join in their Partners program that provides teachers and students with multidisciplinary, standard-based curriculum that includes hands-on, real life experiences with plants and wildlife. To learn more about this program, contact the Rapids Lake Center at 952-361-4502 or click here for full details.
The new education and visitor center was constructed with environmental sustainability in mind. It was built to the Silver Standard of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Total energy cost savings was $10,398 in 2008. The ground-source geothermal heating and cooling system alone will save over $1M in energy costs over the expected life of the equipment.
The Center is located in Carver County, halfway between the Cities of Carver and Jordan, just off County Road 45.
